SWACA Environmental Committee

Committee Purpose

In order to have a healthy community we need a healthy environment. Therefore we will be concerned with issues pertaining to the surrounding air, water, and land, and how they affect the well being of our community.

  1. The committee is available for community members to express their 'environmental' concerns or ideas.

  2. The committee will be proactive in building environmental awareness through community oriented actions.

  3. We feel strongly that any initiatives the Environmental Committee undertakes will engage and bring the community together.

  4. Having 'fun' will be a priority as it is a sustainable way of meeting out goals.

Action Plan

  1. Seek and document South Wellington and area residents concerns;

  2. Facilitate resolution or mitigation by working within the community or- through referrals to appropriate NGO's and/or local government;

  3. Research and education;

  4. Network and collaborate with other local environmental groups to bring awareness to the community as a whole;

  5. Have documentation of activities available at SWACA meetings.

Community Litter Clean-up a Success!

SWACA Environment Committee EventAbout thirty volunteers (ages two to seventy two) from the South Wellington and Cassidy communities, pulled together on Thursday evening (May 22) for our first SWACA litter pick up. In just an hour and a half we picked up 170 KG (374 lbs) of litter! We finished up the event at the Cranberry Hall with homemade mint and ice tea, cookies, and assorted gifts and prizes, enjoyed by all .

Many thanks to all the children in the community who really put in a lot of effort and were a huge help. We also very much appreciated the adults who all together helped make it so much fun.

Support for the litter pick-up was provided by;

  • The Nanaimo and Area Land Trust (NALT) native plant nursery on Spruceton Road for donating plants.

  • David Dunaway for potting fragrant herbs.

  • Maude Mackey of the Regional District of Nanaimo for making arrangements for us to deposit our collection of litter at the RDN landfill with no charge.

  • And a very big thank you to David and Barb Ehmig, who sorted out the recyclables and generously provided their truck.

We are all in it together...pick up a piece of litter everyday.

On behalf of the SWACA Environmental Committee many thanks,

Eve and Gillian
